WWI flying ace honoured 81 years after death

Monument for Canada's most decorated war hero

First World War flying ace William Barker downed 50 enemy aircraft and received the Victoria Cross after being shot three times when he found himself alone in a dogfight against 15 German planes.

How is it possible that we haven't recognized this man until now?

The article also mentions another Canadian hero named Billy bishop. Canada's top scoring ace of the first world war. Below is a link for a bio on bishop.
