Palestinian bid for U.N. membership

http://www.washingtonpost.com/world/national-security/palestinians-submit-statehood-bid-to-un/2011/09/23/gIQA33YiqK_story.html?hpid=z3

Sucsess!!

I believe the goal of this UN bid was to force Isreal back to the negotiating table, but to do so from a position of strenght. The have put many nations in a position where they have had to openly support a two state solution. With this international negognition Isreal will not be able to dictate terms any longer.

WWI flying ace honoured 81 years after death

Monument for Canada's most decorated war hero

First World War flying ace William Barker downed 50 enemy aircraft and received the Victoria Cross after being shot three times when he found himself alone in a dogfight against 15 German planes.

How is it possible that we haven't recognized this man until now?

The article also mentions another Canadian hero named Billy bishop. Canada's top scoring ace of the first world war. Below is a link for a bio on bishop.

Hats off to both you gentleman.

Turkey and Isreal are really starting to butt heads

Expert deems Turkish threat on Cyprus drilling serious
http://www.jpost.com/DiplomacyAndPolitics/Article.aspx?id=238981

In another chapter of Turkey vs Isreal they may be about to start a more serious conflict. As world demand for fossil fuels increases and supply is decreasing I think we are going to see this sort of thing flare up all over the world. Nations are now starting to consider claims to energy rich places as vital to their national security. I posted in an earlier post about a similar dispute brewing in the South China Sea, there are multiple claims going over arctic territory ( This is clearly Canadian turf... biased i know. deal with it)
Thus far we have only seen some saber rattling and tough talk over these disputes. but how long until shots are fired. If you place two opposing armies or navys in close proximity to each other, bad things can happen.

I am really impressed by the expanded missions and capabilities of the drones.
I do have concerns about the moral implications of turning war into a video game. The current generation of drones are basically remote controled. So it is in fact a human being that makes the decision to fire and kill another human being. Im not sure im comfortable with the next logical step in this weapons platform. Autonomous unmaned aircraft. Can we really give the decision to kill to a computer? Is a life really to be subject to an algorythm? a calculation. This screams skynet to me.

http://www.cbc.ca/news/world/story/2011/09/21/obama-un-abbas-netanyahu.html

I hope that Abbas carries through with his request to the UN.  However Obama is correct. A vote at the UN in favour of Palestine will not change the facts on the ground. Only a deal with Isreal will.  I also think that this pressure on Isreal to make a deal is the real point to all this. Isreal is being put in the spot light as the real impetus of peace in the region. Why dont we pressure Isreal for a change? Im sure Turkey would like to become our main stable ally in the region. How would Isreal like to loose a little military aid? Never going to happen... but one can wish.

I cant help but be impressed by Obamas speechs. That guy can make his point. Im still pro palestine here.

In south China sea, a dispute over energy

Another example of China flexing a lil muscle. Expanding her influence in the region.

As chinas demand for oil and natural gas increases as predicted in this article. Double for oil and quadruple fir natural gas. You can guarantee that china will take a much more aggressive Stance in the south china sea. With the exception of Japan no one in the region can come close to handling the Chinese navy in a confrontation. The Chinese are also very well prepared for amphibious operations. If taking a few islands become necessary. Ive also wondered if they will eventually find a way to muscle into the arctic resources. Butt heads with russia perhaps.

No matter how long it takes to find Muammar Gaddafi, it is now relatively easy to draw up a scorecard on the six-month conflict in Libya and anoint the winners and losers.

Only a few remaing Gaddari strong holds left. While the resitance is stiff, it is all but over in Libya's civil war. The UN has voted to hand control of Libyas seat in the general assembly to the transitional rebel council.  Thus officially recognizing them . All that remains to be seen is what happens if Gaddafi is caught alive. As well as how are the remainig loyal Gaddafi officers are handled. .... Well on to Syria

Why Israel should vote for Palestinian independence

http://globalpublicsquare.blogs.cnn.com/2011/09/16/why-israel-should-vote-for-palestinian-independence/?hpt=wo_r1

"Israel’s current leadership considers the resolution a dire threat to the country’s strategic interests and has made it a top priority to limit the Palestinians’ diplomatic coup. But Israel could achieve its own desperately needed coup by doing what no one expects: voting, under several critical conditions, for Palestinian statehood."

Very good article. Well worth giving a read.

After giving this a second read. I really must say, this would be a very shrewd political play. I like it. Do they have the balls to make such a bold play?

Abbas to ask UN to accept Palestinians as full members

http://www.cnn.com/2011/WORLD/meast/09/16/palestinian.authority.abbas.un/index.html?hpt=hp_t1

http://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/un-showdown-over-palestinian-statehood-tests-limits-of-us-influence/2011/09/15/gIQATBTlVK_story.html

I am 100% behind this move for a two state solution. Im gonna do a little writing about this one tonight. stay tuned

"A successful vote in either body will not lead to an established "state" with defined borders, but it would afford the Palestinian government an upgraded international status allowing them to pursue legal actions against Israel."

And there is why all the fuss. Time and again the UN and has chastised Isreal for their handling of conflicts against Gaza. I think they are worried about ending up arrguing this out in The Hague.

So it really strikes me as hypocrisy that Isreal is so vehemently against a UN vote on a Palestinian state. The certainly didn't like Palestinians fighting for freedom. Now the dont want Them trying to find a peaceful option. If you look at the history and creation of the state of isreal , they didn't seek anyone's approval. They ignored The British Mandate for Palestine. Which was agreed upon by the league of nations on 24 July 1922 and which came into effect on 26 September 1923. It was done in order to establish new administrative regions in the middle east in order to avoid a governmental vacuum after the collapse if the ottoman empire after world war 1. This continued until 14 May 1948, when David Ben-Gurion, the Executive Head of the World Zionist Organization and president of the Jewish Agency for Palestine, declared Israel an independent state. The next day Isreals Arab neighbors attacked in defense of the Palestinians. There have been a series of wars since then. Resulting in isreal occupying the gaza strip, west bank, Golan heights, and Sinai peninsula. In the early days the zionists integrated terrorist groups involved in political assasinations into the govt. The stern gang for example. So their argument about Abbas allowing Hamas to join forces neing acceptable is highly hypocritical. As is their arguing against working to create independence outside an agreed upon frame work. Lets not forget how often isreal has faced accusations of human rights abuses in conflicts against the Palestinians. I'll post a few links here regarding isreals disproportionate use of force against civilian targets

Swissair 111 Reconsidered

This was a very interesting and detailed piece. sources listed at the bottom. It pre dates the current news, but is one of the most detailed articles ive come accross. Its also the first metion ive seen of possible electro magnetic interference from military air craft.

Swiss Air testing methods questionable?

The article states that Auger analysis was used to try to determine if the arcs were the cause or result of the fire. Incidental to this analysis, "unexpected" levels of magnesium were found.

Auger analysis has been found to be useless in determining if arcs were the cause or result of a fire. Right from the beginning, the hypothesis was questioned:

Swiss air flight 111 may not have been an accident

http://www.cbc.ca/m/touch/news/story/2011/09/14/swissair-investigation.html#

This is an interesting twist. I'm not sure what grabs my attention more, that it may have been a bomb. Or that this investigator was told to keep quiet and alter his notes. To what end would we want to cover this up? If it was a bomb are we talking terror attack? Assassination of one of the passengers? Or covering up the robbery of billions in jewels?

"The plane carried a Saudi prince, a relative of the former shah of Iran and high-profile UN officials. Diamonds and gems that would be worth half a billion dollars today were also never found."

pick your conspiracy here. Any debunkers out there care to offer an explaination for the high levels of magnesium ? I'm obviously no aviation expert. I find it hard to believe that such a flammable substance would normally be part of an aircraft.

It seems I may be partially wrong here. I did a little googling and found some articles about magnesium being used in casting parts for helicopters. As well as it seems that it was a common material used in aircraft during world war II.

http://www.magnesium-elektron.com/markets-applications.asp?ID=8

http://warbirdsforum.com/showthread.php?t=29

Swiss air flight 111 was a macdonell Douglas md-11. So far I have found no mention of magnesium castings being used in this aircraft.

Secretary General Kofi Annan to the Democratic Republic of the Congo to attempt to negotiate a peace accord with Laurent Kabila in an erupting regional war; and Joseph LaMotta, son of former boxing world champion Jake LaMotta. Also among the passengers were Mahmood Diba, the cousin of former Iranian Queen Farah Diba, Saudi royalty Prince Bandar Bin Saud bin Saad Abdul Rahman al-Saud, former New York Times executive John Mortimer and his wife Hilda, and Dr. Roger Williams, a top cardiovascular genetics expert and professor of internal medicine at the University of Utah.

Obama praises Gander for kindness

Where were you on 9/11?

I'm laying here watching tv and pretty much every channel has something about 9/11 on. So I'm wondering what you were doing on 9/11. Where were you. What were your thoughts when you first Heard the news? I was working at a harveys restaurant. A customer stepped up to order and says " did you hear a plane just crashed into the world trade center" as he and I discussed it another customer comes along and hears us talking. It didn't crash he says a second plane just hit the other tower. America is under attack. I almost didn't believe them. This can't be true right. I headed down the mall to stand out side the Sony store and see what the tvs were saying about. Every tv was tuned into CNN. The were already replaying the plane strike over and over. Here in nova scotia we had hundreds of stranded passengers because of them grounding all flights. My restaurant helped feed many of these people who were scared and stuck in a country they don't know. It was a strange few days. People didn't complain about being stuck. They Seemed to realize that for the moment there were bigger things going on in the world. So here we are 10 years later. Are we safer? Has anything changed? Or have we just stirred up the radicals of the world.? Please share your 9/11 memories.

Why Syria is different than Libya

Update. Libyian rebels are now attacking the last gadafi strong holds. I guess we find out soon if he dies have chemical weapons ready for his Alamo stand
http://www.nytimes.com/2011/09/10/world/africa/10libya.html?hp

http://globalpublicsquare.blogs.cnn.com/2011/09/07/syria-is-much-stronger-than-libya/?hpt=hp_bn3

I was happy when the united nations agreed to assist the rebels in libya. For once it seemed the west wad intervening with a real good cause. A vicious dictator was killing his people. And after the lessons we all learned after world war two there is no way we can sit back while some mad man kills any who oppose him. Now the Arab spring has reached Syria. Another brutal regime holding onto power by shooting protesters. Were going to help the syrians too I thought. How disappointed was I. Here we are succeeds in pushing gadafi off the throne and still we do nothing to help Syria? What's with that? Guess we don't buy enough Syrian oil to take notice. Or are they scared that action against Syria will bring Iran into the mix? I think that when the people rise up and demand the government to step down it is our duty to help them. How are we picking and choosing like this? Isn't a Syrian life worth the same as a Libyian life? Do you think we should intervene in another countries civil conflicts? Should we turn a blind eye?what are your thoughts? Please leave a comment. I'd like to see what people think if the Arab spring. Drop me a line

http://www.washingtonpost.com/world/asia-pacific/pacific-president-obama-behind-big-us-diplomatic-push-at-meeting-of-pacific-leaders/2011/09/08/gIQAvHIGBK_story.html

In some of my first post on this blog I had shared some links about chinas military modernization. These pacific nations meetings are definitely being driven by this fear if Chinese expansion into the pacific. The united states is not a member if this group I'd pacific nations yet has sent senior official to be on the side lines shaking hands and kissing babies. This is a time that they need to show some if these places a litle love. After all what happens if they suddenly need bases to fight in the pacific from. With the Chinese navy only a few years off from having an operational carrier group, military planners are starting to see that in the event of war the chinese might be able to cut our lines of communication in the pacific. Cut Japan and south Korea of from America. I suspect that once the Japanese have their house in order again we will see the offensive capabilities of their navy upgraded significantly. They need to be planning for the need to break out into the pacific against chimes carriers and some very good diesel electric subs. Not to mention this new Chinese anti carrier cruise missile.

Turkish PM: Israel is 'spoiled boy'

Update: http://bit.ly/nDuTSW
Turkey is saying they will escort future aid ships into gaza.

Bout time someone called like it is.
This one is really starting to heat up. An item to keep an eye on. There are sanctions in place. Talk of more to come. And a rumored visit to gaza by the Turk president.

So it seems that the Israeli ambassador to Egypt was chased right out of the country. Protesters in cairo attacked the isreali embassy. Using sledge hammers the broke through a wall and stormed the building. The isreali ambassador and his family had already been evacuated at this point.
http://www.nytimes.com/2011/09/10/world/middleeast/10egypt.html?_r=1&hp

Now here us what strikes me ad interesting. In recent weeks egypts military. Which for the moment is in total contol of the country. Have very quickly and firmly shut down student demonstration in tahir square. Peaceful rallies. Yet in come troops. Shut it down. Yet here us a violent attack on a foreign dignitary and absolutely no military response. They sat back and let it happen. We are seeing a major shift in power. It seems clear that both turkey and Egypt are drifting away from isreal. And towards their Muslim counterparts. To some degree this is just internal politics. Supporting isreal was never popular with the average egyptian. So the military council gains public support by snubbing isreal.

Ontario tornado confirmed in Wednesday storm

Global warming my friends. We are seeing severe storms in new areas, more and more hurricanes. Those worry me the most personally as I live in Nova Scotia and I'm directly in the path of a good number of them. Below is a Youtube link of some of the damage caused by this tornado.

A new Sino-US arms race?

A New Era

A New era in U.S foriegn relations

This is one smart guy. I really like pretty much every article ive read by him.

Some highlights
"Compared to the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, the Libya operation was a bargain.  It cost the U.S. about $1 billion.  The wars in Iraq and Afghanistan collectively cost the U.S. $1.3 trillion. In other words, success in Libya could be achieved at less than one-tenth of one percent of the cost of the interventions in Iraq and Afghanistan.  That's not a bad model for the future."

brave guy
